Resident Application Template & Walkthrough
Resident Application Template Branch
__________________________________________________________________

Before you begin your application, please spare a moment to read the following application rules and suggestions. Failure to do so may result in your application being denied before it even gets to review! You have been warned.

  • Please make sure you have read all of our required reading before you begin the application. Please pay specific attention to the forum rules and the character creation threads.

  • When you post your application, please do so in the application process board. Title it with your character's first and last name only. For example: John Doe.

  • Do not alter the application code in any way. Do not use blinding colours. If you wish to differentiate some parts, you may put them in italics, bold, etc.

  • Your character will have been interviewed by a psychologist either at their current residence -if in England- or at a representatives headquarters in London. They will not be interviewed at Highgrove.

  • Please read the application walkthrough (below) thoroughly. It will include mentions of things that are most likely to get your application pended, along with instructions on how to answer certain sections, so save yourself some time and effort now by sparing a few extra minutes to read.

  • Anything you put in the OOC section will be assumed to be unknown, so if all your info is here, then Highgrove won't have any reason to admit the character. The OOC section is for dirty little secrets that no-one knows about only.

  • Please try to answer all questions on the application thoroughly. You may have to use a little artistic license if your character is reluctant to speak. We need to know everything so that they can be approved, so poke them with a spork if you must. Alternately, you may have a psychiatrist or guardian fill out the written sections. Read the walkthrough for further instructions on this.

  • Please keep your application image within reasonable size bounds. Ideally, 400px by 400px should be the very maximum size.

  • Lastly: Have Fun! Don't take anything too seriously, and don't fret. Remember, it's just a game!

The Walkthrough

Resident Application Template Resapp
__________________________________________________________________
Basics

This section is pretty straight forward. This is in character so it should be written out as if it is being answered by the resident or a psychiatrist writing for them. Remember, if you have a psychiatrist writing on the application, we'll need to know who they are and you'll need to differentiate their voice from the resident's voice by putting it in italics or in a different (reasonable) colour, etc. (We recommend "blue", if you opt for a colour.)

Your Playby Image Here, in IMG tags.
This is an image of your character's playby. Post it in image tags, and try not to make it too big.

Resident Full Name: You can include any middle names here, unlike in the application title.
Resident Date of Birth: This is pretty straight forward, as are the following sections.
    Resident Age:
    Resident Gender:
Current Address: Remember, if your character is not from the UK (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland - Southern Ireland, just "Ireland", is not a part of the UK.) they will need to have been referred by a psychiatrist, and they'll need a damned good reason why they weren't able to go to a home or institution in their own country.
    City/Town:
    County/State:
    Country:

    Resident Hair Colour:
    Resident Eye Colour:
Resident Height: In Feet and inches
    Resident Weight: In pounds
Distinguishing Marks: This is for other identifying features such as birth marks, scars, tattoos and piercings. Remember, your character will need to explain how they got pierced or tattooed under age, since it would be illegal for the tattoo artist or piercer to perform these on a minor.

Medical Screening

This section is also written, either by the resident or a referring psychiatrist or guardian. Don't forget to note somewhere on the app who is writing for the resident if you choose to use two voices.

Do you have any ongoing medical conditions for which you require long-term treatment or medications?

Be aware that Highgrove Home for Children is not a hospital. While it has a medical clinic, it is not equipped to handle cases where residents or staff have serious, life-threatening ailments or long-term disabilities. Highgrove House is also not handicapped friendly, as it has no wheelchair ramps or elevators. It is not equipped to manage residents who may be blind or deaf either.

Are you aware of any allergies you may have to foods, medications or environmental elements? If so, please list them below along with age of onset.

Though it may be tempting to list off a slew of allergies here, we advise against going to overboard with these, as it may deter Highgrove from accepting the resident if they are unable to medicate them, for instance. his is not to say you cannot list allergies, just try to be concise.

Do you take any other medications or drugs not prescribed to you, or participate in the consumption of alcohol or tobacco?

Yup, this is for the rebels and junkies. Does your character smoke, drink, or take drugs? Make sure you list what they're taking and how often they take it. If it's a drug that's hard to come by (Such as MDMA (Ecstasy), LSD, Magic Mushrooms, etc) we'll also need you to explain how they get a hold of it somewhere on the application. The same goes for expensive drugs such as narcotic painkillers and benzodiazepines. You'll need to explain how your character can afford their habit.

__________________________________________________________________
Environmental Screening

This section is also written, either by the resident or a referring psychiatrist or guardian. Don't forget to note somewhere on the app who is writing for the resident if you choose to use two voices.

Where were you born and where did you grow up? What was it like there?

What was early life like for your character? What was their home life like? What was their neighbourhood like? Try to give us as much background info about their early life as you can, because often-times these early years are very important in developing psychiatric illnesses.

Please describe your relationships with your biological family, including parents, and siblings if applicable.

Have your character or their shrink tell us a bit about their biological family. What are their parents like and where are they now? Do they have any siblings, and if so, how do they get along with them? If they no longer live with their biological family now, do they know where they are or what they're up to?

How were/are you in school? How are your grades? Do you enjoy school?

This one's pretty straight forward. How is your character in school? Do they work hard and get good grades, or have they been slacking off? Do they get along well with other students or are they withdrawn or constantly getting into fights?

Do you participate in any extracurricular activities or belong to any after-school clubs?

Again, pretty straight forward, but as with the last question, beware falling into the dreaded Mary-Sue trap with this one. Consider, before you answer, that a character who has had a particularly tragic or terrible upbringing is unlikely to be an A-Student or a virtuoso Violinist, etc. Make sure you consider how a terrible upbringing would affect the rest of their life and their mental health.

If you no longer reside with your biological family, please describe any previous homes as well as your current situation.

This part is for discussing the other foster or state homes your character has been to. If they are still with their biological family, you won't need to answer this question. However, if they are in other homes, we'll want to hear about what those homes were like and how they got on there. Try to be as detailed as possible, as with the bio-family question.

Do you have many/any friends? If so, please describe them.

This is where we'll want to hear about your character's social interactions. Do they make friends easily or are they kind of a loner? if they've got friends, what are they like? Do they run with the 'bad kids' crowd or are their friends relatively harmless?

Are you sexually active? Are you aware of any gender preference, or preferences in intimate practices, activities or situations?

This one's pretty straight forward too. Just like the questions asks, is the character sexually active, and if so, do they have a gender preference. The last part of the question is geared towards finding out if they suffer from a sexual disorder, such as masochism, sadism and fetishism. They will need to explain what sorts of circumstances get them excited, if this is the case.

Have you ever knowingly committed a crime? Were you caught and convicted? If convicted, what was your sentencing?

This is where we'll want to hear about your character's possible misdeeds. Have they broken the law and not been caught for it? If so, what did they do? If they were caught, we'll want to know what happened next. Were they convicted, and if so, what was their sentence? Remember with this question that they cannot be sentenced to Highgrove as a punishment for breaking the law. If they are deemed mentally unfit to stand trial, they would go to a mental health facility, not a children's home. If they were fit to stand trial, they would go into juvenile detention or undergo some other kind of sentence like community service and fines.

Clinical Screening

This section is also written, either by the resident or a referring psychiatrist or guardian. Don't forget to note somewhere on the app who is writing for the resident if you choose to use two voices.

Have you ever been diagnosed with any psychiatric ailments by a medical or psychiatric professional? If yes, please explain below.

This is something of a trick question, to see if you've been paying attention. In order to be admitted to Highgrove, your character will need to have a diagnosis of some kind of psychiatric ailment from our accepted issues list. Tricksy, tricksy.

Please describe any incidents associated with these ailments, such as antisocial behaviours, social or environmental difficulties, incidents of self harming, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, substance abuse, etc.

This is a question where we'll want a lot of detail. It's not enough for the app to state that your character has a certain diagnosis. We need to see the ailment in the character. We want to know what they've done and what they're like that has led them to be diagnosed with their issue(s). Please try to be as detailed as possible on this one.

Have you ever seen a licensed psychiatric professional, psychologist, or counsellor for these ailments? If yes, please list doctor(s) or counsellor(s) below:

This is another trick question! I know, right? In order to have been diagnosed with a psychiatric ailment, your character will have needed to see someone in the psychiatric field, of course! We'll need to know who they were, and how long your character has been seeing them for.

Do you take any medications for any diagnosed psychiatric ailments? If yes, please list medication, dosage, and frequency of dosage below:

Buyer beware! A great deal of psychiatric medications prescribed to adults are not approved for use in children. You'll need to do some digging to find out what kind of medications they may have been given. Also, avoid the temptation to go overboard here, as if they've been medicated into a vegetable state, this will need to be on the rest of the app. If you chose not to have them medicated for their ailments, you will need to explain why their therapist decided not to prescribe them medication.

Have you ever been admitted to a short or long-term psychiatric facility as a result of these ailments or associated incidents?

What this question is asking is whether your character has been hospitalised in a mental institution because of their actions and their diagnoses. We'll need to know why they were hospitalised, where, and for how long. We'd also like to know why they were released.

How do you feel these ailments affect your quality of life or your situation in life?

Just as the question suggests, we want to know how the ailments affect the rest of their life. This is another question where we'd like to see the character's diagnoses actually reflected in their character rather than just seeming tacked on or labelled. Don't forget that these ailments should be reflected in the whole application too though. For example, an avoidant personality disorder character is unlikely to do really well in school and have lots of friends, etc.

If you could be cured of your ailments, what would your goals in life be?

Pretty straight forward, really.

How do you feel these goals would be best attained?

Likewise straight forward. What does your character think would be the best course of action in order to reach their goals?

Why do you feel you are being referred to Highgrove, and by whom?

The most important part of this question is the 'whom'. We want to know why they're being referred to Highgrove, and who is doing the referring. It is not enough for parents to just not want to bother with their kid any more. They need a real reason to be here. Answers such as "My family just don't want me any more" are not viable options, or at least if the character does answer thus, we need a second voice to say what the real reasons are.

Psychological Evaluation
The Spoken, Representative Interview

Okay, this is the spoken part of the application. This means that when you're filling this part out, you should imagine that your character is sitting across a table from the psychologist, answering these questions in real time. You may include the actions of your character by labelling them as Patient Observations from the interviewing psychologist. We recommend adding these on to the end of the answer by putting them in italics and writing them thus:
Patient Observation: The patient shifts uncomfortably in his seat and appears to be avoiding eye contact.
The questions are pretty straight forward, so I'll skip the explanations for each one and move onto the next section. Good luck!

Out of Character Section

This section is obviously out of character. You do not need to answer in 1st person here as you would on the rest of the application.

Is there anything your character is not telling us? Do they have any dirty or dark little secrets they're omitting from their application? Please explain below.

Player Beware: Please, please, please keep it in your mind that this section is not for your entire character history. Your character history should be covered in its entirety on the in character application above. Anything you put in this section will not be taken into consideration by Highgrove, because it will be assumed that it's something that no-one knows about. So, for instance, if the main event that would get your character diagnosed with an ailment is something no-one would know about, Highgrove will not be able to admit them, and on top of that, your application won't make any sense. We need all the character details in the sections above. This section is only for dirty little secrets that no-one knows about the character, and that are not necessary to their story in order for them to be admitted to Highgrove.

The rest of this section is very straight forward.
