Spoken Interview With Highgrove Representative

Representative: Thank you for meeting with me today. We will now begin the recorded interview. I will ask you a series of standard questions. Please try to answer them to the best of your ability. So, firstly, how are you feeling today?

Resident: I've been better.

Representative: And what circumstances have led you to apply for residency at the Highgrove Home for Children?

Resident: I didn't. This is a home for girls, d'you really think I'd actually apply to go from one shithole to another? I might be crazy but I'm not stupid.
Patient Observation: Keziah sits with her right elbow on the table her chin resting in her right hand, refuses to make eye contact, clearly agitated. Though she initiates and holds eye contact when she states she is not stupid.

Representative: Do you have any medical conditions we should be aware of? If so, please explain.

Resident: Nothing, I'm healthy enough.

Representative: Have you ever been diagnosed with a psychiatric illness? If yes, have you ever been hospitalised or sent to a special care facility for these illnesses?

Resident: When the brain trust found the compound I was diagnosed with something called Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and something called um... I dunno, it means I pull at my hair at night when I can't sleep or when I'm stressed. Only in the back where no one sees and can make comment. I don't understand the first one though. I've never been to a war or anything or had to kill anyone, I just survived my childhood is all, and most people can say that. And it was bad, terrible really, but that's all. I lived through it and somebody finally sent people to check on the barking mad loonies on that little island.

Patient Observation: It takes a lot of gentle prompting to get her to speak this much. She rests her forearms on the table and then her chin atop them, staring at the table grain as she speaks.

Representative: How does your current state of mind affect your day to day life? Are there any incidences of note which you feel are a direct result of your state of mind, such as suicide attempts, arrests, hospitalisations, et cetera?

Resident: Sometimes I get sad, really sad the way I used to feel when I was little and looked outside, like...everything was as it would always be, nothing would change and ...I dunno, it's like trying to swallow sand I guess. and I feel like all my wires are crossed. When I get angry, I cry and when I know someone's about to kick the shit out of me--happens more often than I'd like-- it's like I step outside of it and I'm watching some other redhead bob around like a rag doll.
When I was first taken away at fourteen I was sent to live with a family. The Doves I think, the son was a bastard. He picked on me constantly and he put a cig out on my side when I was sleeping on the couch downstairs once...I got him back though. I saved up the used cat litter for a week and filled his computer with it, his school bag, shoes and his bed. Sometimes I get in fights but the other kids start it, I don't wake up wanting to fight. People push me.

Patient Observation: She rests her right hand on the back of her neck, slowly her fingers reach into the nape of her neck, and it is obvious she is pulling out hair as she talks.

Representative: have you ever harmed yourself, others, or animals? If yes, please explain.

Resident: I get into fights, considering I never win 'em that might be self harm hm? Being too stupid to finish a fight once in it? And no I don't harm animals, it's wrong.
Patient Observation: Keziah ignores further prompting on this subject.

Representative: We understand you are having trouble at your current place of residence. Could you please describe the problems you are having, and the results or repercussions that have come about because of them?

Resident: My dorm mates though it would be funny to play a prank, I didn't like the prank, something happened, they aren't here anymore and I’m the last one being shoved out. They shouldn't have touched my fuckin' journal, it was my property, they'd no right, I've no regrets.

Patient Observation: As before, Keziah tries to ignore the question, when prompted by Ms. Fields she makes her final comment.

Representative: What five words would you use to best describe yourself?

Resident: Five words to describe myself? ...Angry, Scared--I'm not playing this stupid little game anymore.
Patient Observation: She seemed thoughtful, taking the exercise seriously to a degree until this point, when she abruptly decided to stop.

Representative: Do you have many friends? Could you describe your relationships and where you met these friends?

Resident: I haven't got any friends, don't see the point.
Patient Observation: The patient looks down and to the left while squirming in her seat.

Representative: How would you describe your relationship with your biological family? Did you spend much time with them? Do you have any siblings?

Resident: None Existent. I'm told I've brothers, three of 'em, but I don't know them so I can't say I care, my parents can both quite frankly take a sideways trip to whatever hell they believe exists. I simply wish them all the love they showed me as a child.

Representative: Are you sexually active? If yes, are you aware of any sexual preferences regarding gender or situation?

Resident:Are you completely stupid? Are you seriously asking me that, you sick fucking bastard?
Patient Observation: Keziah became highly agitated and verbally hostile then attempted to leave the room. A long break is needed before she will continue.
I don't like sex; I don't like talking about it, thinking about it, or dealing with it, alright?

Representative: Where did you grow up, and what was it like there? How do you feel about where you grew up?

Resident: I grew up on a small island, Eilean Bàn, it's some little island in the middle of Scotland. He and his sick followers lived there the rest of us were basically property. It was a rotten time If I hadn't been so afr-- it was miserable, that's how I feel about my growing up.

Patient Observation: Keziah squirms in her seat and wraps her arms around her stomach, leaning forward slightly and looking at the floor.

Representative: How is school? What are your grades like, and do you enjoy it? Do you participate in any after-school activities?

Resident: I get decent marks, nothing too much, I'm not stupid but I'm not on the same level as people my age should be, I suppose. But I'm not bothered. School's not important.

Patient Observation: Keziah looks down and to the left, squirms in her seat again when she is being evasive, she responds in this pattern.

Representative: What do you hope to find at the Highgrove Home, and how do you feel about potentially becoming a resident there?

Resident: I don't want to go, how many times do I have to say it before someone listens to me? I never even asked to do this interview, Ms. Fields over here is making me.

Patient Observation: Ms. Fields is the supervisor for Keziah's ward, she stayed in the room to ensure Ms. Baird spoke and did nothing to disrupt or distract from the interview.

Representative: Lastly, how do you feel about what you have done so far with your life, looking back on it. If you have done unacceptable things, how do you now feel about those?

Resident: Fuck off.
Patient Observation: Keziah openly glares and refuses to say anything more, the interview ends after an additional attempt to get her to offer more insight.

Out Of Character Section

Is there anything your character isn't telling us? Do you have more information to add about your character that they would not tell the representative about? Please explain below:

Where to start? Her emotional issues are a lot more powerful that she lets on, and no sixteen year old wants to admit to night terrors or bedwetting. She is a textbook case of CPTSD, she both craves and rejects social interaction because she cannot trust which leads to her deeper issues. Keziah was born into a cult run by her parents, primarily her father, who followed their own home-spun misogynistic, pedophilic 'religion' with about nine other 'families' on an uninhabited Scottish island. Her father, Randall Biard and a half dozen other men were elders in the cult that believed in forcing very young children into sexual contact with adults, called "sharing." Keziah has three brothers, but because children were segregated by gender and sibling relationships were not fostered, she only knows of them in an abstract sense, not as family she would care to know or connect with.

At age ten, Keziah experienced menarche (a girl's first period) and was 'married' to her father the following week, impregnated twice* before the cult was discovered on 22 July 2009. She only stayed with one foster family in and her opinion that was enough, Carol and Jason Dove were lovely people, if a bit overworked, their son Aiden took particular pleasure in covertly tormenting his foster sibling, culminating in burning her with a cigarette for kicks when she slept on the couch. Aiden was studying for his GCSE's so Keziah first erased his hard drive then took kitty litter saved from the previous week and poured it into the tower. She was very quickly removed from the home. At her current placement, the St. Margret's Home for girls, she had two dorm mates decided to steal and make copies of her journal and splice together excerpts to make more sexually explicit entries where there were none. The girls brawled resulting in injuries all around, and a few minor breaks.

Keziah's school record for the last two years is rife with fights with students and verbal confrontations with staff. She can be argumentative, belligerent, insubordinate, and downright crude when she wants to be, although the majority of it is an act she believes if she makes herself a pain to deal with then she will not have to worry about being hurt again, if compliance equaled pain then disobedience should logically peace, right? That’s the logic Keziah is using.

*Her first pregnancy was a miscarriage at three month gestation when Keziah was 11, the second was a stillbirth at seven months when she was 13. She speaks of neither pregnancy, she pretends they never happened.

Therapy Report

__________________________________________________________________

    Resident Name: Keziah Biard
    Therapist Name: Dr. Gunner Bjorgen
Patient Observations: Fairly compliant and calm in body language and manner.
Therapy Report: Answers the question with a projection, stating her confinement as a result of her foster parents not wanting her because she is not a young child any more. She elaborates with a flippant side comment about her poor temper. When prompted for a more personal perspective, she claims ignorance as to the reasons her foster parents no longer want her, and states group homes are different.
Notes: Recommend follow-up on discussing and exploring personal responsibility.

Group Activity Report
Keziah Biard Branch
__________________________________________________________________

    Resident Name: Keziah Biard
    Residing Adult Name: Eileen McDonald
Patient Observations: Keziah came to the activity wearing a snood (a head covering of a knitted fashion) which she fidgeted with during the session. Considering her file and her obvious hair pulling at the end of the session I believe that she should not be allowed to wear such things again in order to discourage her from repeating the behavior.
Therapy Report: Keziah refused to share her drawing with the group and was therefore asked to stay behind. She also resorted to cursing and took to personally cursing me and refusing to apologize. She made it very clear that because I am a woman I had no authority over her. She did eventually explain that she had drawn a book and it made her happy because it was hers.
Notes: I think Keziah is having a hard time adjusting to Highgrove and should be worked with closely until she can better be assimilate. In order to make her feel more at home I suggest her working with male group leaders and a male therapist so that she feels more comfortable.

Therapy Report
Keziah Biard Branch
__________________________________________________________________

    Resident Name: Keziah Biard
    Therapist Name: Dr. Maxwell Rose
Patient Observations: Keziah seemed in a foul mood when she entered but did not say anything. She took her seat and kept to herself until I asked for everyone to go around and tell me their names. She was the first to respond. For the most part of the session, despite her mood, she was behaving until Ace answered his questions. At this point she began mouthing words to Ace and tensions began to spike. It was clear that Keziah started the blossoming incident but was quick to silence herself when I said they'd both be placed at the wall if they did not stop. For the session she behaved.
Therapy Report: The topic was feelings and the children were instructed to tell me how they felt. No specific topic was given because I wanted them to be honest. Keziah was very honest with her answer. She responded that she "felt like shit" and that she wanted to be in bed with a hot water bottle. As I had given the okay for the kids to use whatever language they saw fit she was not scolded for swearing. At this point Aubrey turned to her and asked if she was bleeding. I now understood her answer and given Aubrey's nature he was removed from the group.

At the end of the session I spoke about honesty, trying to make the children understand that by being honest with their therapists and the staff that they stood a chance to leave Highgrove and live their life. Keziah did not respond and was excused with the group.
Notes: I will be arranging an individual therapy session with Keziah when she's feeling more herself before assigning her any medications. I feel that the tensions between her and Ace should be monitored and that they should be kept apart for now. In a controlled environment I would like to have them both in to hopefully confront whatever issues they have with each other.

Therapy Report
Keziah Biard Branch
__________________________________________________________________

    Resident Name: Keziah Biard
    Therapist Name: Dr. Maxwell Rose
Patient Observations: Keziah entered, seeming a little displeased but not overall unpleasant. She seemed confused as to why I was there but after a few questions regarding that the session began. Overall she seemed unwilling to listen or unable to understand what I was telling her. Most of her answered held some level of attitude. However, despite this she did not verbally lash or become violent. The only time her voice raised at all was when her father was mentioned. We did not discuss him at length although our next session will focus more on that fact.
Therapy Report: I wanted to focus on the issue of control with Keziah for it's something she seems to want. I wanted to help her to understand that she is in charge of her own destiny now and not her father. However, she either seemed unwilling to take me seriously or simply did not care. She became a little unsettled when we talked about decision making and she went on to talk about how she wasn't able to make any of her own decisions at Highgrove. However, when asked what she did in her free time she said she went to the stables and that no one told her to do so. It showed that she did have some say in what she did. As the session came to an end I brought up how much control she how now versus when she was with her father. Keziah snapped, saying she would not talk about him. I told her we wouldn't but asked her to compare how much control she had now to back then.
Notes: I plan to continue working on control with Keziah as I believe that this path is currently the best way to help her. Once she understands that her life is hers, and not her father's, she will be much easier to work with. I'm also going to be paying close attention to her as far as her C-PTSD is concerned. Currently, other than a small outburst, I haven't seen many symptoms. A change in diagnosis may be in order or perhaps ad additional diagnosis might be made. For now, therapy will be the only course I take. No medication will be added at this time.

Therapy Report
Keziah Biard Branch
__________________________________________________________________

    Resident Name: Keziah Biard
    Therapist Name: Miranda Samedi
Patient Observations: Keziah was extremely quiet, seeming calm enough but not showing a huge amount of enthusiasm for the activity we completed. She isolated herself when making the cookies, seeming to prefer to complete the activity alone and without interacting with the other boys. When speaking to her, she answered my questions politely, at first telling me that she considers Highgrove to be an adjustment and that she has been here for three months. When I asked for further information, she told me that Highgrove is nicer than her other placements, which I viewed as a positive sign. She told me about her friends Laura, a roommate, and Verne, the stable-master. As we were about to continue our conversation, however, Keziah made a mistake with her cookies and responded with some inappropriate language. She finished up the session quietly, taking her cookies with her and quickly leaving the room. I don't believe that she exchanged a single word with anybody beside myself and Ms. Adele throughout the session, appearing to ignore the boys entirely.
    Therapy Report: N/A.
Notes: Keziah's foul language appears to be a running theme, judging by the notes I have read so far in her file. Perhaps this is something to be addressed?

    Resident Name: Keziah Biard
    Therapist Name: Dr. Matthias Savage
Patient Observations:Keziah entered quietly and remained so for the majority of the session. She seemed uncomfortable with the topic of the discussion.
Therapy Report: The topic of the session was fear. I asked each resident what it is that they are afraid of. The purpose of the exercise was to give the residents the opportunity to be honest with themselves and gain some insight into what motivates and influences their actions. When I asked Keziah what she was afraid of, she replied that she was afraid of the dark. She stated that it was uncomfortable. I informed her that fear of the dark is usually representative of fear of the unknown. I asked if it was the unknown that scared her or something else that she was aware of. She replied with “The unknown, I suppose.” I held Keziah and Maggie after dismissing the rest of the group in order to remind them that they must avoid lying and holding back in order to make any progress in the therapy process.
Notes:As it is the case with most residents, Keziah seems reluctant to share, with the group, or at all.

    Resident Name: Keziah Biard
Therapist Name: Solomon Halsley and Madeline Adele
Patient Observations: Keziah tried to skip the session, and was antisocial when forced to join. When asked about a favored book, Keziah shared that was illiterate and had no tales as a child to share with us. She then shared a story that was, essentially, a tale about her father raping her, vaginally and orally, and blaming her pain on sin.
Therapy Report: This was a group session aimed to discuss the children’s favorite books, and to discuss what made these books special to each child.
Notes: Keziah shared her story with little to no empathy, as if it hadn’t happened to her. Also, Ellen mentioned multiple times that Keziah seemed to wet the bed. She might want to be moved to a lower bunk.

Therapy Report
Keziah Biard Branch
__________________________________________________________________

    Resident Name: Keziah Biard
    Therapist Name: Dr. Maxwell Rose
Patient Observations: Keziah entered the group last and sat down without a word. Unlike previous sessions, she was quiet through much of it and didn't speak up unless spoken to. She censored herself when answering, something I haven't seen her do before. When asked to show hands of who would want to go back to their old life she was the only one who did not raise her hand. She was asked to stay after the sessions so that I could speak to her privately.
Therapy Report: The topic today was family and while I had no concrete plan, I was interested in the reactions of the residents to the subject. It was a sensitive subject for them all. I spoke to Keziah last and asked her the definition of family. She replied at family was something you spend your life recovering from. When I came back around I asked how she was recovering. Her reply was a bit snappy, saying that she was at Highgrove so she wasn't recovering well. Before I could continue the group was interrupted by Cecil who said that she wasn't there anymore. I agreed with him and wanted to hear her response to this. This was when the group discussion turned.

As I came around to the end of questioning the topic turned to why the kids were there. I asked by show of hands which would prefer to go back to their old life or stay at Highgrove. As previously stated, Keziah did not put her hand up. She was asked to stay behind and I told her that I knew she didn't want to go back, that I wanted to help her leave it behind as well. She seemed upset by the idea that the other kids wanted to go back to their old lives. That somehow it made their situations better than hers. I assured her that all at Highgrove had troubled pasts and that those who raised their hand didn't really understand how bad it was. I offered Keziah the the chance to show them that she was better than her past and that she could live a life away from it and Highgrove. This earned a smile and she made a joke about not wanting to see my face again. After this she was excused.
Notes: I feel that this group session finally got through to Keziah, that she was able to see that she could live free of her father's influence and not spend her life in an institution. I look forward to future sessions with her and to see how she progresses from here.

    Resident Name: Keziah Biard
    Therapist Name: Dr. Matthias Savage
Patient Observations: Ms. Biard entered the session reluctantly and quietly. She only spoke when she introduced herself to the group. She displayed obvious discomfort in regards to the topic of the discussion.
Therapy Report: The topic of the session was regret. My intent was to ask each resident to disclose something they have done that they regret. The majority of the residents in attendance were dismayed by the topic of discussion. As I asked each resident to disclose their regrets, Ms. Biard’s levels of discomfort seemed to increase. However, due to Mr. Frost’s outburst and the premature conclusion of the group session, I was unable to ask Ms. Biard to disclose her own regret.
    Notes: None at this time.
