Highgrove Itself

What is the Highgrove Home for Children? What isn't it?
The Highgrove Home for Children is exactly as advertised. It is a Children's Home. It is not officially recognised as a mental health facility. It is not an asylum. It is not an alternative to an asylum. It is for children who are required to go to a children's home.

Where is Highgrove?
Highgrove is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, in North Western England. It is located in the picturesque lake district and the nearest population centre is the tiny (fictional) village of Grove End. The nearest notable (real) town is Keswick, Cumbria.

How does my character get into Highgrove? Can they be sent by law enforcement/hospitals?
Characters who are sent to Highgrove require housing in a children's home, first and foremost. Highgrove is not officially listed as a mental health facility. So, no, characters may not be sent by law enforcement (the courts), but they may be suggested for this type of care by a psychiatrist, assuming that they do not warrant being kept in a mental health facility or cannot otherwise function in a state home or foster home. Being sent to Highgrove, therefore, cannot be suggested instead of a prison sentence. Characters should not be sent from their home setting to Highgrove unless there is a valid reason why they should not be living with their biological parents, such as neglect, or abuse on either the part of the parents or the child. Parents cannot simply dump their children in Highgrove because they don't want to deal with them any more. The child should present a significant risk to themselves or others in order to be sent sway from home, or else their parents should be deemed unfit to have custody of them. Children may be sent to Highgrove from any state run children's homes or foster homes within the UK. (The UK consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland only.) Children from outside of the UK must have a valid psychiatrist referral and a reason why they would be sent here from another country, instead of into a home in their own country. (This is where the 'not being able to function in regular homes' part comes into play.)

What can't I play at Highgrove?
Aside from our forum rules prohibiting supernatural characters (outside of our special canons) there are some specific character types we will absolutely not accept on Highgrove. These include characters with Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personalities), patients with psychotic disorders (Such as schizophrenia or any disorder that cause them to see/hear things that are not there), characters that are unrealistically over the top and dramatic and/or characters that are unrealistically experienced or evil for a children's home, such as serial killers and comic book style criminal maserminds.

FAQ Empty FAQ - Canons

Special Canons

Can all of the ghosts disappear at will and walk through walls, etc?
In a way, yes. All canons can simply seem to "appear" in a scene though they were not there moments before. They may also seem to "depart" from a scene. However, they may only do this while no-one is looking. When they have disappeared, the canons may not affect the world or be seen or heard by anyone. They cannot move objects etc, and must still obey the laws of physics. This means they cannot walk through walls, etc. Only canons who have the special ability to appear and disappear at will while still affecting the world around them may display poltergeist activity. However, any other special abilities of your canon may still come into play if they linger in an area, even invisible. For instance, if their presence disrupts electronics, the electronics in the scene should still be disrupted until they actually leave. Invisible canons may still interact with other canons.

How should I post my canon, if they have a special ability or an effect on those around them?
When you post a thread with your canon, or you join a thread, you should OOCly note at the top of their first post what effect they have on the scene or the people in it, if anything. For instance, if the special power is that they cause electronics to fail when they are near, that should be noted. Likewise, if they affect the way people feel or think, this too should be noted.

How do canons avoid detection if they're stuck here year after year? Wouldn't they get found out?
Yes, they likely would get found out unless they were careful. It's up to you, as the player, to figure out a way that they have existed this long without raising suspicions. Perhaps they simply go invisible for years at a time, unable to interact with the world or the living (they can still interact with other canons). For those canons who don't know they're dead, chances are that Branbury's pulling strings for them behind the scenes, so feel free to plot with him OOC.

Can I change the canon's Play-By?
We'd really prefer that you not change the PB. If you absolutely can't stand the PB but you really want a certain canon, contact Ghost to see if another PB can be agreed upon. (Bear in mind, Ghost will have to remake the canon page images and update the face claim, etc, so don't just do it on a whim, please.)
