Medical Screening

Do you have any ongoing medical conditions for which you require long-term treatment or medications?

No.

Riley is prone to fevers, and though they rarely get to about 40°C, low grade fevers are common. One of the Sisters sits with her for precaution, but they normally fix themselves. She often talks while under the effects of her fevers, which is where I learned more about her situation than she ever would have voluntarily told me.

Are you aware of any allergies you may have to foods, medications or environmental elements? If so, please list them below along with age of onset.

No.

Do you take any other medications or drugs not prescribed to you, or participate in the consumption of alcohol or tobacco?

No.

Environmental Screening

Where were you born and where did you grow up? What was it like there?

I don't know where I was born, I'm a fucking orphan. I grew up all over Cornwall, but mostly here in Saltash. I guess it's a good life, for an orphan.

Riley spent many years of her childhood here at Saint Monica's House for Orphans, as well as in homes around the area.

Please describe your relationships with your biological family, including parents, and siblings if applicable.

I have no biological family. The Sisters and Father Lowen keep me away from the closest thing to a family I ever had, but before that my brother and I had a good relationship.

The brother she mentions is not a biological brother, but a child from one of the homes that adopted her. Joseph has not been a favorable influence on her.

How were/are you in school? How are your grades? Do you enjoy school?

I used to be great in school, but not anymore. I try to be good sometimes, but it really doesn't matter. No one cares.

When Riley was younger, she made very good grades, but after her return from the Fewer family, she hasn't been able to keep them up. It's a shame, really. She was one of the brightest in her class.

Do you participate in any extracurricular activities or belong to any after-school clubs?

No. I sew sometimes, I like to make my own clothes.

If you no longer reside with your biological family, please describe any previous homes as well as your current situation.

I've been to a lot of homes, but the Fewers were the closest thing I had to a family, and even they don't care about me.

Riley currently lives here at St. Monica's, under my direct care. We don't believe that it is safe for her to be placed with another family until we get to the root of her problems.

Do you have many/any friends? If so, please describe them.

I thought Kelly was a friend, but she's just a backstabber. I hope her and her baby rot.

Kelly is another one of the girls at our house, and she sat with Riley when they were both 10 and Riley thought her fever was going to kill her. She told Kelly many things about her life with the Fewers, which she later threatened the girl to never share with anyone. It wasn't until last year that Kelly came forward with some of what she knew, fearing for Riley's safety.

Are you sexually active? Are you aware of any gender preference, or preferences in intimate practices, activities or situations?

No, I don't do that kind of thing. I don't wanna end up like one of those kinds of girls.

Have you ever knowingly committed a crime? Were you caught and convicted? If convicted, what was your sentencing?

I guess running away isn't a crime, otherwise I'd be locked up by now. I think I'd have accrued like, twelve life sentences by now.

For three or four years, Riley took up the habit of running away from the orphanage or from her adopted homes, sometimes on her own, sometimes with the help of Joseph. She always came back unharmed and in time to go to school the next day, and trying to keep her home was often more trouble than it seemed to be worth. When we learned why she was running away, that is when I began keeping a better eye on her, and a tighter leash.

Clinical Screening

Have you ever been diagnosed with any psychiatric ailments by a medical or psychiatric professional? If yes, please explain below.

None that make any sense.

I have personally diagnosed Riley with Stockholm syndrome, which recently has evolved into something seemingly closer to Dependent Personality Disorder, though instead of being dependent to anyone on hand, she is dependent on Joseph, and only Joseph.

Please describe any incidents associated with these ailments, such as antisocial behaviours, social or environmental difficulties, incidents of self harming, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, substance abuse, etc.

Nothing that anyone but Joseph and I know, and he won't rat on me, like Kelly. And I'm not telling.

This is where her fevers that I mentioned previously come into play. Through many months of hard work, I believe I have pieced together most of what Riley will not share. During her stay with the Fewers, I believe she was emotionally abused by Joseph, possibly even kidnapped on a regular basis under the guise of 'camping trips'. These trips were a sort of punishment, dealt out to her by Joseph when he deemed necessary. It's hard to tell if he thought he was doing the right thing, trying to raise his little sister, or if he was just a cruel child with an excuse. Riley has never mentioned these events in our therapy sessions together, but her reactions to my questions lead me to believe that there is more to this story. When I asked the Fewers about these trips, they said that Joseph and Riley would go camping all the time, bonding together with nature, away from the TV and internet. They said that the children grew very close after they began going out, and they thought it was a good sign. At some point after her return to our care, Riley attempted suicide, though when, where, and how I can barely even guess. None of us even believed her depression to be so serious as to drive her to such lengths. None of the times that she ran away sent out any red flags that something particular had happened. Somewhere between the abuse and her suicide attempt, I believe Joseph's role in her life changed from tormentor to guardian, but I'm not sure what, exactly, prompted this change. All I can assume is that somewhere along the line, she grew to depend on him, and when she was finally freed from him, found herself at a loss as to what to do with herself.

Have you ever seen a licensed psychiatric professional, psychologist, or counsellor for these ailments? If yes, please list doctor(s) or counsellor(s) below:

I don't think Father Lowen is a real doctor. I think he's a big faker who just wants to keep me from being happy.

I am a licensed psychologist, as well as a priest.

Do you take any medications for any diagnosed psychiatric ailments? If yes, please list medication, dosage, and frequency of dosage below:

According to the Sisters and Father Lowen, prayer is my medication. I think it's retarded.

I do not believe in passing out medication like candy, but I do often suggest that a firmer connection with The Lord would help Riley's situation.

Have you ever been admitted to a short or long-term psychiatric facility as a result of these ailments or associated incidents?

No.

How do you feel these ailments affect your quality of life or your situation in life?

I think the adults here are hallucinating, thinking that locking me up in here will keep me and my brother apart. That affects my life a LOT because not seeing him makes my life suck.

Riley has lost any hope she had for a normal life. Right now, all we can hope for is to be able to rid her of this cancer that has poisoned her spirit.

If you could be cured of your ailments, what would your goals in life be?

Probably a lot more depressing than the ones I've got now. I can't imagine a life without my brother.

How do you feel these goals would be best attained?

I'm not even going to bother answering this, but Father Lowen said I have to write something to answer every question.

Why do you feel you are being referred to Highgrove, and by whom?

They all hate me, just like everyone else, and they want to get rid of me. I keep coming back to them because I'm broken, and they just want to get rid of me.

I feel that a permanant institution, one that could give her closer attention than I can, would be a better solution than those I offer her here.

The Spoken, Representative Interview

Hello, and thank you for meeting with me today. Our interview today will be recorded for review later. I'm going to ask you a series of questions, and I'd like for you to answer as fully as you are able. I'd like to start by asking you how you're feeling today.

Riley: I guess I should be thankful to be out of the orphanage, but I mostly feel like dirt.

Patient Observation: Patient slouches in her chair and refuses to look at me, directing her eyes anywhere else.

Okay. And how are you feeling about this opportunity to join our family at Highgrove?

Riley: It's just another orphanage, isn't it? You call it a family, but it's just a building to keep children in.

If you could alter one event in your life, what event do you think you would change or remove, and why?

Riley: I would never have run away from the Fewers, away from Joseph. It was the worst mistake of my life. I pay for it everyday. I've lost the most important thing in my life.

Patient Observation: Patient begins to cry, quietly, obviously distressed. I wait for her to gether herself before continuing.

If you had to describe yourself in only three words, what words would you choose and why?

Riley: Lost, helpless, hopeless?

Patient Observation: Patient looks at me for the first time with a mixture of anger, resentment, and desperation in her eyes.

How do you feel currently about your life so far, and anything you may have done?

Riley: I feel like I'm paying for my mistakes in the harshest way possible. Of any punishment I have ever received, these past two years have been the worst, and you just want to add on to that pain. You want to take me farther away from him, instead of allowing me my God given right to happiness and a life of my own! It's not fair!

Patient Observation: Patient becomes stressed and overly excited, shouting and crying in her seat. I again wit for her to calm herself before continuing. She has also traded avoiding eye contact for direct, glaring contact.

What would you do if you found a stranger being attacked by another stranger, and why?

Riley: What does it matter? I'd leave it alone. It's not my problem.

Patient Observation: Patient looks distressed, but keeps calm.

What would you do if you were being threatened by a stranger, and why?

Riley: Well, if Joseph was there he would protect me, but you people won't let him near me, so I guess I would get beaten to death and left to die in a gutter because you people think you're helping me. I guess that would solve everyone's problems, huh? If I died in a gutter?

Patient Observation: Patient tears up again, but holds onto her anger instead of crying again.

Have you ever deliberately harmed yourself, another, or animals in the past? If so, why do you think that was?

Riley: Of course not, that's bad. Hurting yourself is like, a direct line to sin and hell and whatever else Father Lowen spews at his sermons.

Patient Observation: Patient seems nervous and avoidant again.

And lastly, what do you hope to find at Highgrove, and how do you think this will help you to learn and grow?

Riley: I guess the best I can hope for is that I can survive until Joseph finishes university, and that he will come take me home. Because that's my only true family, right there. Highgrove will just be a stepping stone on my way.

Patient Observation: Though her words sound hopeful, the patient's tone of voice shows that she holds no such hope.

This concludes our interview for today. Thank you for filling out our application and speaking with me. We will contact you or your guardian shortly with our decision or recommendations. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of your day. Goodbye.

Out of Character Section

Is there anything your character is not telling us? Do they have any dirty or dark little secrets they're omitting from their application? Please explain below.

During their camping trips, Joseph threatened and emotionally abused his sister into submission, telling her that it was for her own good. He told her that their parents were too busy to raise her, and had left the job to him, which wasn't true, but it gave him an excuse to humiliate and degrade her on a regular basis. When Joseph left for university, Riley ran back to the orphanage, thinking that she was free of her brother's wrath. Instead, she found that she could not live her life without his micromanaging criticism. She did attempt suicide, which gave her the scar on her temple. Soon after which, a reformed Joseph attempted to fix the monster he had created out of Riley, but only managed to make the situation worse. He is trying to slowly cut himself off from her, saving both of them from the terrible past that he inflicted on them.

But don't fret! Just follow the steps given to you below and edit your application appropriately. When you're done, please reply to this thread to let us know that the application has been edited, and we will review it again.

  • Riley's gonna need some tweaking before she's ready to join us at Highgrove. While it is possible for self harming to stand on it's own in an individual Riley is a little to close to the masochistic line. The point of self harm is that you do it to yourself, not seek out others to do it for you. I recommend dropping the pain seeking behavior and focusing on what Riley does to herself. In addition, the sado masochistic play will need to be removed from the out of character section. We are not accepting masochists at this time and it reads like this is the road Riley is aiming to go down.
  • It is very briefly mentioned that Riley is buying drugs with her allowance and then once again further on down. Could you please elaborate a little more on this. It's unclear if it's meant to be a substance abuse side issue or if she just happened to do a few drugs here and there. If it is a substance abuse side issue we'll need to know what she's on, how she pays for it, where she gets it, and how she started.

Riley has been almost completely re-tooled, and I think she's a new person. I believe I have taken care of all the issues in her pend, too.

  • So close! Riley needs a little work before she's ready. Stockholm Syndrome is sympathy and affection toward an abductor, not an abusive boyfriend. In order for Riley to be diagnosed with this disorder she would have had to be kidnapped or held hostage for a length of time and form an attachment to the one controlling her or the situation. Bare in mind, the abductor doesn't necessarily have to return the affection. I feel that a new disorder all together would be the better choice if Riley is going to keep the back story with Joe. I recommend researching Dependent Personality Disorder. I feel that if explored that would cover what you're looking for.

  • Alrighty! So, we still have a little issue with Riley's Stockholm Syndrome; as it is, there still doesn't feel like there's enough of a difference between the time that Riley spent with Joseph in a home setting and a "kidnapping" situation. The time that she spent with Joseph on these camping trips doesn't seem to be particularly traumatic from the information we are given and the sporadic nature of the trips would give her enough time to possibly recover or at least have mentioned something to her foster parents if these were abusive situations. Riley doesn't seem like the kind of girl that would just take that sort of abuse lying down. If you're dead set on using Stockholm we're really going to have to see it in a large chunk of time, where Riley has no chance of escape. Looking at her now though she would probably be better set with just sticking with the Dependent Personality Disorder.
  • In your OOC section we are given how Riley returned back at the orphanage - she ran away from the Fewers. This is very uncharacteristic of either of the diagnoses that Riley has been given in her application. From when Joseph left, or probably before that she would have felt a strong tie to him. Running away from the place where that relationship developed when she is supposed to be yearning for him is a bit counter intuitive.
  • Likewise in your OOC section we are given the information that Riley did attempt suicide and has a scar from it. If she's under the constant care of the men and women at the orphanage how did they miss such an attempt and more importantly, why was it never documented when the injury appeared? If she was trying to kill herself the injury would have had to be pretty severe so we can only hope that men and women of the church would notice.
