Spoken Interview With Highgrove Representative

Representative: Thank you for meeting with me today. We will now begin the recorded interview. I will ask you a series of standard questions. Please try to answer them to the best of your ability. So, firstly, how are you feeling today?

Resident: Fine, I suppose. A bit tired.
Patient Observation: Patient fidgets in chair and averts eyes of representative.

Representative: And what circumstances have led you to apply for residency at the Highgrove Home for Children?

Resident: My sister can't handle me anymore... that's what her boyfriend says. He says I can't be trusted. They think I'm off my rocker.

Representative: Do you have any medical conditions we should be aware of? If so, please explain.

Resident: I'm allergic to peanuts, that's all I know.

Representative: Have you ever been diagnosed with a psychiatric illness? If yes, have you ever been hospitalised or sent to a special care facility for these illnesses?

Resident: Yes, some doctor, can't be bothered to remember his name, said I suffered from stereotypic movement disorder and sexual masochism. I've never been shipped off anywhere, but I used to go to therapy and sit there for two hours.

Representative: How does your current state of mind affect your day to day life? Are there any incidences of note which you feel are a direct result of your state of mind, such as suicide attempts, arrests, hospitalisations, et cetera?

Resident: Most of the time I don't really know who I feel. I feel blank, bored even. If I'm not feeling like that, I usually feel sad. I don't think I've ever tried to kill myself, really. To die wasn't my direct intention, but everyone thought it was. I was running a blade up and down my stomach when I pressed a little too hard, I guess. When I feel lonely, that's when I usually... do things, so my sister doesn't like to leave me alone too much.
Patient Observation: Patient begins to slowly rock himself back and forth, unconsciously.

Representative: have you ever harmed yourself, others, or animals? If yes, please explain.

Patient Observation: Patient hunches shoulders down tightly, appears like he's trying to change the question.
Resident: No, I haven't.
Patient Observation: Patient crosses his arms tightly around his stomach, but still continues to rock.
Resident: Well, yes, I have. I'm not sure why. It feels... good. When I prick myself with something on accident, I don't cry or something like other people do. It's weird... I don't like talking about it. The burn feels good and sometimes I can't bring myself to stop. It's like I need to do it. When I get shoved into lockers at school, yeah it bothers me that people think they can do it to me, but it's not the same for me as I think it is for others. Sometimes I feel like I like it.

Representative: We understand you are having trouble at your current place of residence. Could you please describe the problems you are having, and the results or repercussions that have come about because of them?

Resident: My older sister, Charity, is my legal guardian and her boyfriend says that I'm too much work to handle right now. They're running out of money to support all of us and can't think of any other options. Charity's boyfriend, Seth, says that I'm too much work for my sister... says I put a lot of pressure on her. Make her upset, and things.

Representative: What five words would you use to best describe yourself?

Resident: Clumsy, maybe.
Patient Observation: Patient crosses arms and sits quietly for about three minutes.
Resident: People think I'm weird... hm, that's all I can think of.

Representative: Do you have many friends? Could you describe your relationships and where you met these friends?

Resident: Not too many. I only have about two. No one really wants to hang out with us, really. Everyone at my school used to think we were strange. I'm not too close with them or anything, we don't go over to each others' homes, but we ride bicycles around the forest and things. I met Jensen and Riley both at this after school program for students who's parents get off work late and such. I never liked to hang out much with them. Always, I felt uncomfortable and strange, like I didn't belong. I don't like being around too many people anyways. It's stressful.

Representative: How would you describe your relationship with your biological family? Did you spend much time with them? Do you have any siblings?

Resident: My father died when I was two years old, so when Charity was twelve. I never knew him, so I can't say what he was like at all. My mum was really touch and go. Always busy at work, but when she finally came home she would drink and have a bunch of strange people over. Charity would always force me into my bedroom, saying I was too little to be in the living room with everyone. I suppose they were doing drugs or something. I'm pretty close with my sister. I think she likes me, but I make her cry and yell a lot. Usually, I stay away from her because I don't want her to be upset.

Representative: Are you sexually active? If yes, are you aware of any sexual preferences regarding gender or situation?

Patient Observation: Patient laughs nervously and sits higher up in chair, glancing out window frequently.
Resident: I, uhm... I prefer... neither, I suppose? Girls annoy me. I don't really know. When I look at someone I find attractive, I don't really see the gender... I just sort of see them... kicking me in between my, you know... legs or hitting me or something. I try not to pay attention though. It makes me uncomfortable.
Patient Observation: Patient's rocking stops, but starts up the habit of jiggling his leg.

Representative: Where did you grow up, and what was it like there? How do you feel about where you grew up?

Resident: I grew up in this pretty loose neighborhood. Not too much stupid gossip and things flying around. No one really got in your business and stayed out of things. I was free to do basically whatever I pleased with both Charity and my mother working. I never really liked it much, though. Despite the freedom, it was bland and the same thing every day. It made me feel dreary.

Representative: How is school? What are your grades like, and do you enjoy it? Do you participate in any after-school activities?

Resident: Anyone who says they like school is insane. Even if I don't like it too much, I get good grades, I think. Usually A's and B's. I'm not talkative, so I usually just concentrate on my work. People were always very rude to me. I'm shoved hard into lockers quite a bit. It's like I'm their chew toy. You know, like how dogs have? I never did any sports because I'm too clumsy and they don't interest me. I used to take guitar lessons and Charity tells me that I am very good. Does that count?

Representative: What do you hope to find at the Highgrove Home, and how do you feel about potentially becoming a resident there?

Resident: I have nothing really that I am looking for because I hate to set myself up for disappointment. I don't know what to feel or what to expect. I guess you could say I do not want to come. I'll miss Charity, not so much Seth, but I know that she can just take care of me anymore.

Representative: Lastly, how do you feel about what you have done so far with you life, looking back on it. If you have done unacceptable things, how do you now feel about those?

Resident: Hm, it's weird. I haven't done anything bad. Maybe I just cause too much trouble. I am a lot to take care of and maybe people just don't have the time to deal with it. My life has been bland and grey. Maybe I am a bit strange, I suppose?

Out Of Character Section

Is there anything your character isn't telling us? Do you have more information to add about your character that they would not tell the representative about? Please explain below:

When Isaiah was one through seven, he used to violently throw himself against any surrounding walls, sometimes until almost to the point of passing out. Sometimes, when their was nothing to throw himself against, Isaiah would rock himself back and forth. Isaiah became aroused by pain when he was beaten up at age twelve by a group of boys on the way home from school and continued to induce pain upon himself afterwards.

This Application Is Currently Pending
Isaiah Petit Branch

But don't fret! Just follow the steps given to you below and edit your application appropriately. When you're done, please reply to this thread to let us know that the application has been edited, and we will review it again.

  • First things first: your playby can't quite pass for 16 in the photo you've chosen for him. Please choose one in which he looks a bit younger. A quick Google search turns up plenty in which he appears age-appropriate.

  • At 5'11" and 137 pounds, Isaiah would be a walking skeleton. I'd suggest bumping his weight up to something more reasonable, or lowering his height significantly. Check height to weight ratio charts for men to get a good idea of a normal weight for a male of his stature.

  • The biggest point I want to make here is that we need more details on Isaiah. Details are the life blood of the application process, and of your character. We want to know everything. We're looking for well thought-out, fully-fleshed characters here. Leave no stone unturned in the process of getting to know your character and showing us who he is as well.

  • Though Isaiah mentions that he suffers from stereotypic movement disorder, there's not enough evidence of this on his app. I'd suggest thoroughly researching this issue to get a firm grasp on it so you can give us more insight into how it's affected his life. Simply mentioning that he has it isn't going to suffice. Show, don't tell.

  • Next up is the sexual masochism which is also briefly mentioned, but never fully explained. If you want to keep this as an issue, we need more details on it. Personally, I'd suggest picking one primary issue for Isaiah and sticking with it. Considering the information given on his app, it occurs to me that deliberate self harm would be a better fit. I'd recommend you drop the masochism entirely and go for that instead.

  • No matter what primary issue you decide to stick Isaiah with, there has to be details on it in his verbal interview. Simply mentioning it in the OOC section won't cut it, seeing as how he can't be admitted for something the Highgrove staff don't know about. If you want him to be admitted for a certain issue, it needs to come up in the interview and be thoroughly explored and explained. Right now, with the information we've got, he's simply not severe enough to be admitted to Highgrove on any account. He needs to pose a serious threat to himself and/or others to be worth Highgrove's time.

Sorry I left so much detail out, I was a bit brainless when I made it. Still, no excuses. I added more detail in that wasn't there before and changed his age down to fifteen. Then, his height down a considerable amount.

Incident Report
Isaiah Petit Branch
__________________________________________________________________

    Resident Name: Isaiah Petit
Reporting Staff Name: Dr. Maxwell Rose
Notes: Patient was found in the men's room during the Christmas celebration after being attacked by a still unknown assailant. Initial examination on sight revealed a broken nose and a reddening mark on his head. The nose was bleeding but that seemed to be the only injury that was. Isaiah, along with the other boy, were taken to he medical building to be tended to. Medical report to be added later.

Therapy Report

    Resident Name: Isaiah Petit
    Therapist Name: Dr. Maxwell Rose
Patient Observations: Isaiah was nervous early in the session but seemed to relax some as it went on and he was able to speak about what happen. He was very forth coming and honest, something I was not expecting when I initially walked in to speak with him. He even gave me a bit of an attitude toward the very went.
Therapy Report: I went to speak with Isaiah on the matter of what had happened in the bathroom and at first he seemed like he'd be telling me a similar story to the other boy. However, after another question he opened up to and told me that there had been a blond boy in the bathroom whom he did not know. He said that him and the other victim, Cecil Sharpe, were attacked by this boy and put down after a single hit each. He did not hint as to whether or not Cecil knew the assailant but the other boy had been mad about something. He went on to beg me to not tell anyone about what had happened and that it was embarrassing. I said I wouldn't and from there things shifted away from questions. He seemed unhappy to be taking the pain medication but knew the routine of having his mouth checked.
Notes: Isaiah seemed genuinely afraid of the blond boy and I feel that if he'd had more of his head at the time would have continued to lie. His honesty was a slip of the tongue. It should be noted that the other boy, Cecil, is diagnosed as a self harmer but is showing the signs and symptoms of sexual masochism. The pair should be monitored but do not believe they were there to do each other harm at this time.
